After reading about all the hype surrounding this restaurant I had to check it out for myself. For my main, I had the famous (infamous) "Duck in a Can", which is rolled up duckmeat packed with greens and foie gras in a tin can. Seriously, check out the video on Youtube. Beyond the delicious food I was really impressed by the quickness and dilligence of the servers, who were always moving and easy to talk to, despite the fact that the restaurant was packed from the get go. This staff really deserves a round of applause. Lastly, while I enjoyed myself, I found my time there more of an eating experience than a well rounded meal. If you're going to check out I recommend having a nice salad or something with a lot of roughage. Eating all that duck and drinking red wine really knocked me out. I feel asleep as soon as we got back to the hotel.
I felt like the Duchess of Pork after dining here. They really know how to make a wonderful variety of pork dishes, among other things. The atmosphere is more country casual than I thought it would be, and the washroom is like something you'd find on a farm. Only one of two stalls was working, and they need more than that in such a busy restaurant. The washroom is also behind the bar, so it's an unusual setup in that way. Prepare to line up to use the facilities. I think they need to expand and relocate the washrooms. Although the atmosphere is definitely rural old French Canada, the food is delightful. Both my kids ordered the foie gras poutine and loved it. My husband couldn't resist trying braised pigs feet (Au Pied de Cochon as per the restaurant name) and said it was delicious. I had the Happy Pork Chop, and it was delicious as well. We all walked out of there stuffed and satisfied. Service was very good and the place was packed, even on a freezing winter night.
By far my favorite restaurant in town - the food is INCREDIBLE. I always start with the foie gras poutine as an appetizer -- but should really have it as a full meal. The entrees are too good to pass up on though! And its has a fantastic ambiance - very lively.
I am a huge fan of Martin Picard and he certainly lives up to his name "the Wild Chef" with some of the features at Pied Du Cochon! When we came here, our friends ordered an entire pig's head! I was a little less adventurous with my selection, with a foie gras poutine and an entree of duck and mushrooms. If you have never had a foie gras poutine, I would highly reccommend that you get one ASAP. It is the simply the most divine thing you will ever eat... not for those who are watching their caloric intake!
