While women are frequently the ones cooking at home, more often than not, restaurant kitchens are run by men. In honour of International Women’s Day, we’re putting the spotlight on women-led kitchens. Some of Edmonton’s best restaurants feature the culinary expertise of female executive chefs. Cavern

A beautiful basement bistro, wine bar and cheese shop located in the historic Phillips Lofts, Cavern’s simple, European-inspired menus are all painstakingly created by chef and owner Tricia Bell. Offering simple breakfast fare (baguettes, cheese, fruit, nuts), gorgeous signature cheese and charcuterie boards and a fantastic wine list, Cavern is a lovely place to go at any time of day. Cavern also hosts monthly cheese schools (Wine and cheese? Yes, please!).

Culina Café at the Muttart Conservatory

Located in Edmonton’s beautiful Muttart Conservatory, Culina Café is a breakfast and lunch spot, offering creative, fresh cuisine comprised of soups, salads, sandwiches, baked-goods and daily specials, in addition to serving an award-winning weekend brunch. Only serving dinner one night a week, Culina’s Chef de Cuisine, Stephanie Alcasabas, creates a special Thursday night dinner menu each week. The cheddar perogy and mason jar toffee pudding are to die for.

A hidden neighbourhood gem, Belgravia Hub’s head chef, Sarah Masters-Phillips, makes simple, satisfying and succulent comfort food. Her menu provides a fantastic array of salads and starters, but the mains are where it’s at – comfort food done well. Try the meatloaf, the bison shepherd’s pie or the jambalaya. And, the desserts are straight-up classics done right: crème brûlée, brownies, apple crisp, carrot cake and gingerbread.

King Noodle House Pho Hoang Ltd

Located in the heart of Edmonton’s Chinatown, King Noodle House is an authentic, family-owned Vietnamese noodle house. Head chef Hoa Sen Dau offers 35 variations of the popular and nutritious pho soup, as well as a few non-pho menu selections. Chef Sen Dau’s pho is so good, it made the Tomato’s Top 100 Things to Eat in Edmonton list!

Get Cooking

While primarily a cooking school, Get Cooking Edmonton is also a great place to eat. Founder and chef Kathryn Joel has created a fun and creative calendar of events from cooking classes to brunch pop-ups. Chef Joel’s Get Cooking Edmonton supports local, female chefs; guest presenters include Colleen Heidecker, Doreen Prei and Christine Sandford.
