Matthew Heney's first stint in the retail business was in 1996. He was an actor at the time, and he was looking to augment his income with something a little bit more stable. A friend came across a business opportunity to work with a furniture seller and approached him with an offer: They were looking to open up a new shop in midtown Toronto, and they needed a third person to get involved. Matthew decided to take the plunge and together, the three of them founded Decorum Decorative Finds, an antique, furniture and lighting shop in Rosedale.
In the years to come, the other two founders of the business parted, making Matthew the current sole owner. "Even though I was naïve, as soon as I started, I knew this was for me," he reminisces. "I get tired, but I never tire of the business. It's perfect for me."
Matthew maintains that the work he does is never regimented or structured. It's always engaging. The best part of his day-to-day? “I love finding interesting, unusual and special things for clients and people," he says. "It’s treasure hunting, and that’s what’s exciting."
