Clothes make the man, but what about the man who makes the clothes?
Meet Claudio Migliaccio, co-owner of the eponymous Umberto’s Custom Tailors with his father Umberto. A true family business, Umberto’s has been around for decades. “I grew up in the business,” Claudio says. “I loved getting dressed up all the time. I loved doing what my mother and father were doing here: starting out with a piece of cloth and making an entire suit out of it. I was always intrigued by it.”
To Claudio, “it’s an art. You never stop learning.” He says that every suit he makes is a unique experience, just like every customer’s body and fit is unique. He sees it as a form of artistic expression that “incorporates all the different colours and styles and patterns.”
